With clear water and soft sand, Boracay is considered one the best beaches in Asia. If the criteria is solely clear water and soft sand, then I would definitely agree.
The island is overdeveloped with resort on top of resort less than 50 meters from the water. Not the way I like my island holiday, but given that it was Chinese New Year, I can imagine that in the low season one might have much of the beautiful beach to oneself. It is is nice family destination because the soft sand and shallow, clear water make it a great beach for children.
As for the diving, it was rubbish. There was constant chop and poor visibility due to boat traffic.
The Filipinos were great, so like MacArthur I will return. But next time, it will have to be to Palawan and/or Puerto Galera to get my dive on.
My favorite Asian beach remains Kata beach on Phuket Island, Thailand. Of course in the last few years have been visiting Kata only in August, which is low season. I would probably hate it in the high season.
By the way, if you staying on the beach and you have plans to go out on the drink, leave your passport and anything else you don’t want to lose or have stolen in your room. A met somone who didn’t heed this common sense and a week on is probably still trying to get out of the Philippines.
